Alpenscapes is Big Sky’s go-to resource for creating appealing, alpine-appropriate landscapes that are fire-safe, water-wise, and ecosystem-friendly.
What is Alpenscapes?
Alpenscapes is a partnership between four Big Sky organizations: Big Sky Fire Department, Big Sky SNO (Sustainability Network Organization), the Gallatin River Task Force (GRTF), and Grow Wild.
Alpenscapes exists because we found that all of our missions were working toward the same goal: a resilient, fire-safe, water-wise, and ecosystem-friendly future for Big Sky. But we also recognize that each organization offers its own expertise, and there’s so much to learn from one another.
Rather than working separately, we came together to collaborate, share knowledge, and grow together while creating efficiencies.
Who is Alpenscapes?
Alpenscapes isn’t its own nonprofit, it’s a collaborative partnership between community organizations who share a common vision. Each partner brings expertise in a different area, and together, we’re learning from one another and strengthening our impact.
“By combining our strengths, we can make sustainable landscaping more accessible and consistent for everyone in Big Sky.”
Lizzie Peyton, Big Sky SNO
Why does Alpenscapes Exists?
We’ve found that many of the practices we encourage have co-benefits. Native plants support wildlife, but they also build resilience to fire and help keep our waterways clean. Hardscaping and smart landscape design can both protect homes from fire and conserve water. The list goes on.
Like an ecosystem with many connected parts, we can’t expect to reach our community and organizational goals in silos. Partnership builds expertise, momentum, and resilience.
"When we begin to see our yards as part of a greater living ecosystem, everything changes. The plants we choose, how we water, how we care for our land—all of it weaves into the health and resilience of our community"
Jen Mohler, Grow Wild
